|Theory. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
In science, "theory" is the term used for the explanation that best fits the facts as they are currently known; it's not a law or a rule because it is considered possible that it may be partly or completely incorrect, and to be called a theory in the first place, there must be some theoretically possible condition under which it could be disproven. (This requirement is why the assertion "God exists" is not a valid scientific theory because nonexistence is impossible to prove, while "God does not exist" meets the requirements because it could be disproven by a bona-fide verifiable Act of God.) Many Christians, particularly in the United States, actively misinterpret this to mean that a theory is inherently UNproven, denigrate scientific principles that they disagree with, even when they can offer no valid theory as an alternative. If they truly understood the significance of the term, they would have to challenge their own beliefs - which isn't going to happen. (And yes, the statement is a riff on a famous quote from William Goldman's tale "The Princess Bride." If you haven't read the book and/or seen the movie, we highly recommend that you do so.)
